Sapa Un Jesuit Academy, St. Francis, South Dakota

August was a busy and exciting month at Sapa Un Jesuit Academy as we prepared for the new school year. Our classrooms received much-needed painting and repairs, creating a fresh and welcoming environment for our students. During the last two weeks of the month, we held our regular step-up program for new and transfer students, as well as returning students who needed extra support to start the year in a strong academic way. Amid these preparations was the Rosebud Fair, one of the largest and oldest wacipis in the United States. The Rosebud Fair brought our community together for a joyful celebration. Our students shone with outstanding achievements:

Stoney, an eighth grader, took first place in several riding events at the rodeo.

Liv, another eighth grader, won Miss Teen Rosebud award for her strong values, dancing and poise.

Bella, a fourth grader, won the RST Miss Childcare award for her singing, dancing and confidence during her interview. Bella and Liv were able to display their regalia and Lakota dance for our students.

Both Liv and Bella will proudly represent the Reservation at regional powwows throughout the coming year. These accomplishments highlight the talent, dedication, and leadership of our students, and we are very proud of both of them.

The school year officially began the day after Labor Day, and we welcomed back returning students and many new faces. Students participated in ice-breaker activities to foster community and build connections. Father Edmund Yainao, our head pastor, opened the year with a welcoming prayer and a message of encouragement. Additionally, Jenny Black Bear, our Director of Religious Education, launched weekly religious education classes, ensuring that faith and culture remain central to our students’ learning experience.

With a strong start, joyful engagement, and dedicated staff, we are looking forward to a year filled with growth, learning and continued student achievement at Sapa Un Jesuit Academy.
