St. Francis Mission Among the Lakota, St. Francis, South Dakota
We held our Body, Mind, and Soul camp at St. Bridget’s parish hall and in St. Francis. The theme for the camp was “True North, Trusting Jesus in a Wild World.” The children learned they can always trust Jesus, throughsacred scripture and sacred tradition. We taught one biblical passage a day, which was reinforced through the stations each day. We also incorporated our Lakota language and teachings into our daily lessons. We started our day with prayer and aziliya with sage. We learned a Lakota word and Lakota value for the day.
The children visited five stations during the camp. These included the Scripture Station, where the children were immersed in daily scripture to help them understand God’s word and apply it to their lives. There was the Imagination Station. There was the Science Spot where they learned that creativity and discovery can align with faith. There were the Glacier Games, where they had wild fun and learned meaningful ways to remember the Bible passage every day. There was Wild Bible Adventure, where they heard Bible stories that demonstrated how Jesus is always their friend. We had Tundra Treats, where we provided delicious snacks. We did arts and crafts and outdoor games. All the meals were included during the camp day, and we cooked a traditional meal of bison soup, wojapi and fry bread the last day of camp.
We also celebrated Confirmation at St. Charles Borromeo with Bishop Scott Bullock. The Bishop confirmed five candidates. The candidates prepared for more than 12 weeks, attended 24 classes and a two-day retreat. We congratulate all those confirmed and we pray that the Holy Spirit may light their way so that they grow stronger in their faith every day.
