St. Mary Parish serves a unique and vital role within the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation, home to the Chippewa Cree community. Located on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation, St. Mary Parish is deeply embedded in the traditions and life of the Chippewa Cree people. The parish’s mission is not only to provide Catholic sacramental ministry but also to support the preservation and celebration of the community’s Native cultural identity.

At the Easter Vigil, we welcomed into the Church a mother and her two children. These baptisms were a profound moment for the Parish. The white stole they wore symbolized that they are now “clothed in Christ.” The mother also received Confirmation and First Holy Communion. This sacramental milestone reflects the parish’s commitment to nurturing Catholic faith within families while also honoring the cultural heritage of the Chippewa Cree. At the conclusion of the Easter Vigil, attendees tied a prayer ribbon around the Blessed Paschal Candle, representing prayers asked of the Creator on Easter Sunday. After the Easter Sunday Mass, the children all enjoyed an Easter egg hunt. As the newest member of our faith community, the newly initiated mother accepted a position on the Pastoral Council.

The sacramental life at St. Mary Parish extends beyond individual families to also impact the wider reservation community. Through liturgical celebrations, pastoral care, and community engagement, the parish fosters a sense of belonging and spiritual growth among the Chippewa Cree people. St. Mary Parish’s integration of faith and cultural identity on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation is essential to its mission. The parish continues to be a beacon of hope, leadership, and spiritual nourishment for the Chippewa Cree community.
