St. Michael Indian Mission School, Saint Michaels, Arizona

“Sewing” hands-on learning continues to grow at SMIS. Our newest high school elective, Sewing with Ms. Henio, gives students the opportunity to master the basics of fabric work and sewing machine skills. This creative and practical course allows students to explore design, develop patience and gain confidence as they bring their ideas to life, one stitch at a time.

During recent Friday sewing sessions, students proudly completed one of their first projects: making their own hair scrunchies. From selecting fabric to threading machines and finishing seams, each step sparked curiosity and creativity. The smiles on students’ faces as they held up their completed scrunchies showed how rewarding this hands-on learning can be.

Families gathered at St. Michael Indian School on Oct. 1, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Saint Katharine Drexel’s canonization. The event brought together students, teachers and families for a day and evening filled with prayer, reflection and community spirit.

The celebration began that morning with an all-school Mass. In the evening, a rosary was led by religion teacher Roberta Duncan and SMIS students. Sister Zoe Brenner, SBS, offered a heartfelt tribute to Saint Katharine Drexel, honoring the school’s foundress and her life-long mission to bring faith and education to Native children and communities.

In the days leading up to the event, students participated in classroom lessons on the life and works of Saint Katharine Drexel, deepening their understanding of her courage, compassion and dedication to equality and education.

After the rosary and presentation, families gathered around the fire to roast hot dogs and s’mores, sharing laughter and fellowship under the evening sky. The celebration concluded with a movie night in the St. Kateri Garden, where students and families enjoyed a relaxing and fun evening together.
