St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School, Grants, New Mexico
Nineteen students and family-member chaperones from our 7th and 8th grade classes returned from an unforgettable educational adventure to Washington, D.C. and New York City. The trip was led by homeroom teacher Mrs. Rychener, who guided the group through months of individual and group fundraising to make the journey a reality for our St. Teresa of Avila School students.
In Washington, D.C., students toured the White House and visited historic sites including the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. In New York City, the students explored Times Square, marveled at the beauty of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and capped off the experience with a Broadway performance of The Great Gatsby.
The students saw and experienced so much. From national landmarks to unforgettable cultural experiences, this trip was packed with learning, growth, and fun for our St. Teresa of Avila School 7th and 8th graders. We are very proud of our students for their hard work and so grateful to the chaperones who helped make this trip experience special.
Here is a brief history of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School. We first opened our doors in 1954, welcoming students in the first and second grades. The inaugural instructors were Sister Laura Abell and Sister Mary Mark Visman. Each subsequent year, a new grade level was introduced until the school had classes in 1st through 6th grades.
In April 1967, the first kindergarten class was established, thanks in large part to Sister Elizabeth Ann, who played a crucial role in expanding early childhood education. In 1977, Sister Elizabeth Ann also helped implement the middle school program at St. Teresa School.
Today, St. Teresa School and its Early Childhood Education Program serve children from as young as six weeks old. Our elementary and middle school serves kindergarten to eighth grade students. Currently, we have a total of 82 students, seven teachers, and five teacher aides. Our student body represents various communities across Cibola County, including Grants, Milan, Bluewater Village, Acoma, San Fidel, and San Rafael. Our students actively participate in daily Mass as readers, altar servers and choir members. St. Teresa of Avila School students are having a great school year.
